Mission: “The Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists Medical Student Component is a statewide organization dedicated to uniting medical students across Virginia who are interested in anesthesiology. Our mission is to promote education, mentorship, professional development, and advocacy for students pursuing a career in anesthesiology.”
About VSA-MSC: The Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists Medical Student Component works directly with and under the supervision of the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists to support medical students interested in anesthesiology across the Commonwealth. VSA-MSC aims to provide early exposure to the specialty, strengthen connections between students and practicing anesthesiologists, and encourage student involvement in organized medicine. Through educational events, advocacy opportunities, and collaboration with physician leaders, VSA-MSC aims to support students as they explore anesthesiology and prepare for future careers in the specialty. VSA-MSC also works with the VSA to support student participation in VSA-oriented events, including opportunities for funding to attend professional meetings such as the ASA annual meeting and LEGCON.
Recent and ongoing VSA-MSC activities include:
- Educational events, including student-led journal clubs, residency program open house sessions, anesthesiology audition rotation advising, residency and ERAS advising sessions with program directors, and M4 match panels.
- Hands-on anesthesia events and workshops, such as IV workshops and the annual anesthesiology workshop hosted at Carilion, which brings together students from VCOM, LUCOM, and Virginia Tech Carilion for interactive learning.
- Advocacy opportunities, including participation in White Coats on Call Lobby Day in Richmond, Virginia, where students worked with physicians and state leaders on issues affecting patients, physicians, and the practice of medicine.
- State and national professional engagement, including student participation in
